Refuturing of the words
ABOUT
This piece was born when Taka was asked by his acting teacher to read one line of the history play written by Shakespeare, King John; ‘Death, death, oh amiable lovely death’, traversing the sense and weight of the word of ‘death. He attempted, struggled and failed many times to carry the tone of the meanings. He then realised that it was because the sound of the English word ‘Death’ was not embodied in his body in the same way that his mother tongue had. He whispered the word in his own language, namely Japanese - ‘shi 死’, then many past events in life on death appeared in his mind immediately, and his heart started pumping, the lips dried, and he thought;
”How can I write a poem in another language”
In the first development, the Melbourne-based Japanese artist, Taka Takiguchi and Indonesian/Bandung-based writer/poet Faisal Syahreza shared their artistic practices at the Studio Mainmonologue, and explored a new way of developing the physical theatre, using poetry from Japan and Indonesia by delivery in 4 different languages, English, Japanese, Bahasa Indonesia and Sundanese.
