Humans in between - Showcase performance
“We see the actors as in refractions of their selves. Their deeper stories not spoken that provided a space for the spectators to linger into.” - Tony Yap
“The development process already shows powerful, at times painful and intensely relevant innovations in our performance culture. ” - Matthew Crosby
ABOUT
As much as the Greek god Pan is half human, half goat, we are all beings in-between not only in the intersectional spheres, but also in time and space.
Some initial research was conducted and the concept of ‘medio-passive’ (μεσότης in Greek) was explored, processed and tested to create the new psycho-physical work utilising text, vocal sound, improvised poetry-making method and illuminating medio-passive themed installations.
The work was collaborately developed by Naarm-based diaspora artists, Taka Takiguchi, Angelique Zhou and Ai Yamamoto.
The Showing performance of Humans in between was presented at MAP Pavilion Mini-Fest on 3rd Feb 2023.

This performance seemed to be lavished in shadows, opening an impasse to what could constitute rigid polarities.
The shadows and movements narrates a parallel script. One that uses no words, dance the human nerves systematically constructed.
This was achieved with a state both actors created and dwelled in - in a fluid zone without tedium — giving a level mesmeric specter for automatic contemplation, reciting words from hidden secrets.
Just at the edge of what could be literally spoken was a tonal scripting, stylistically pronounced in slow deliberation. Words that eventually represented neither the active nor the passive - medio-passive.
What emerged in the process? Did the guardians take us with their topographic map?
We see the actors as refractions of their selves. Their deeper stories not spoken that provided a space for the spectators to linger into. This is a development in a theatrical language in tune with that found in Chinese calligraphic scripting. We know the words but not the wording as they emerged or as we read into them. A poetry in motion.
